Exploring Subcultures: Rock-a-billy

The term Rock-a-billy comes from the mix of rock and hillbilly music and emerged in the early 1950s.  The origin of the rock-a-billy style is mostly in Southern United States and was influenced by the merge of the two styles of music. There has been many revivals of this subculture and is still worn today.

The look consisted of full skirt dresses with flats and ponytails for women or pencil skirts and tight sweaters for those who wanted to show their bad side . Everyday wardrobe for men include engineer boots, leather jackets, jeans, oversized blazors and hair styled with the pompadour look. It was altered when regional influences came into it. In the west the western swing style was included into the rockabilly look and the south had their influences too.

Stars such as Elvis, James Dean and Marilyn Monroe were involved in this subcultures look.
